“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” 1950

To say that “Rudolph” was popular or even very popular is to misname the song’s cultural impact. There were many other popular songs in 1949, including Christmas songs, but most of these songs are forgotten today. “Rudolph,” however, was a phenomenon. While the success of “Rudolph” created a sensation in 1949, his long-term place as Santa’s lead reindeer would become evident only during the 1950 holiday season. On October 14 of that year, Billboard noted, “Columbia’s major push is based on its fabulously successful Gene Autry waxings. Autry, whose rodeo is now playing to about 200,000 people weekly, still features his Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer routine, and is adding a new one on Frosty, the Snowman. Columbia distribs have been asked to carry the ball on local Autry tie-ins and department store displays for both Rudolph and Frosty characters. . . . The diskery itself is providing a new array of point-of-sale material for all kid albums.”13 While Columbia obviously hoped that “Frosty,” Autry’s new Christmas disk in 1950, would repeat the success of “Rudolph,” the “Rudolph” single continued to get a great deal of attention from the label.
