WARNING

A loaded rope is cut very easily; when practising, consider using a separate rope to protect the victim.

PRUSIK CORD

● 1.3m of 5 or 6mm soft kernmantle cord tied with a double fisherman’s knot is best.

● The ideal number of prusik loops is three.

● Shorter prusiks maintain the tension on the rope better than long ones. Elongate them with a sling if necessary.

AT THE BELAY

Ensure that you arrive at belays with enough equipment to carry out a rescue – two or three Prusiks, a long sling, a few krabs and extenders should be enough. Belay anchors equalised to a single point make life simpler.

Alternatively, take the second’s rope through a high krab when you think they may fall off, allowing a pulley system to be set up easily. However, this does make an assisted hoist more difficult as the fallen climber will only be on one runner.
