LORNIA- VISCOUNT WILABEE’S ESTATE- CROUX

357TH DAY OF THE 2ND YEAR OF KING PARTEL’S REIGN

I’m not sure when I began to doze, but a soft rap on the bedroom door roused me from my sleep. Shit! I hurriedly pushed the covers off of us, picking up the clothing we had thrown to the floor. Susanna was still left with only the lingerie, so I threw my cloak in her direction, knowing she still needed something to cover up with. The knock sounded on the door again, this time a little louder. My eyes shot to Susanna, the cloak already around her shoulders as she tried to smooth her hair back into place.

Opening the door a crack, I found the same maid I had met at the door earlier that day. She was dressed in fresh clothing, a piece of cloth tied around her neck in a pretty bow, hiding the bruises.

“My lord, is the master available? I wish to know if he will be having supper in the room.” She tried to glance past me, but I closed the door a little more.

“He’s a little tied up at the moment, so don’t worry about dinner.” I winked at her and she blushed a deep shade of pink. I looked back into the room, pretending all was well within, then turned back toward the servant girl. “We do require some clothing though. Something that will fit the lady. Don’t forget a winter cloak as well.”

“Right away, sir.” She bowed slightly, turning away from the door.

While we waited, I debated whether we should try to hide the evidence or just leave the pile of ashes on the floor for the servants to find. I decided on the latter, after all there wasn’t much to be done now that the man was dead. The town would need a new Viscount, but that wasn’t my problem.

I was sure the people of the estate would have more than the death of their master to deal with once they realized what was happening in the basement. A minute later, the same soft knock sounded on the door, and I found the maid standing in the hall with a nice dress and warm cloak in her arms. A bit bulky for a swordswoman, I thought to myself, but it would have to do.

“Thank you,” I said, snatching the dress and immediately closing the door.

Susanna dressed quickly and we left the Viscount's bedroom, heading back to the small museum-like room I had entered from. I wanted to leave the same way, hoping to find our weapons on the way out. Again, we were met with no resistance, leading me to believe the Viscount didn’t have as much power or money as he claimed to have.

“What’s down here?” Susanna asked as we walked down the stone stairs toward the basement of the estate.

“The dungeon,” I answered, feeling a bit relieved that this would be her first time seeing it.

Torches on the wall lit up the space, but the room was still quite dim despite the effort.
