The wolf leans down and sniffs my hair, his sharp teeth catching the light. And I close my eyes and wait for what’ll come next, the pain that death will bring. A few seconds that feel like a lifetime pass, and I feel him leave the bed.

Opening my eyes, I spot him. He’s padded softly toward the door, where he sits, closes his eyes, and seems to sleep.

I watch him for a long time, confused. He’s supposed to be some crazed wolf that would tear me to pieces, so why didn’t he? Does this mean tomorrow when they find me alive it’ll be because I didn’t actually die? Or is the worst still to come?

Always believe the worst, so you won’t be disappointed, a little voice whispers in my mind.

I’m too scared to get off the bed. Or to collect my clothes. So I sit in the center of the bed, trying not to move. Watching the wolf and waiting. Because there’s one thing I know for sure, even when I feel safe, I never truly am.
