CHAPTER VI

The next morning, Ellie woke up bright and early. She was the first one up, (she usually was), so she took the opportunity to take a quick dip in the hot spring, then she dried off and dressed. By then, Cassie was up too and offered to join her for hunting for breakfast. The two women stalked through the forest together, taking down a pair of rabbits and a pheasant, which Ellie gutted, skinned, and cleaned, then chopped up and put into a stew. She'd learned to make a stew out of pretty much anything and it was often the easiest solution for a quick meal.

When the meal was about half cooked, she kicked the young lovers out of bed. Well, one of them was young, compared to her at least. Lena was just a scant two years younger than her, but she seemed like a bubbly teenager again ever since hooking up with Warren. Which gave Ellie a great deal of pleasure. She was very glad she'd gently (okay, maybe not really gently) pushed the two of them into bed with her.

She knew it would work out for the best.

They got up, had a soak themselves, then dried and dressed by the time breakfast was ready. The four of them ate, then Ellie packed up the camp and they hit the road again, continuing their trek towards Valley Vale.

Despite how much fun she'd had over the past two days, Ellie couldn't help but feel that a looming shadow had fallen across her life. No matter how much sex she had with Warren and Lena, (and maybe Cassie), she couldn't escape the gnawing worry about her own immediate future. She knew that she had to make a decision. That her situation was coming to a head. So what could she possibly do? She already knew that the fourteen men her father had culled from neighboring towns and settlements, princes in name only, would never do.

While she could possibly see herself maybe falling in love (or lust) and settling down with someone, they'd all been intolerable in their own, special way. It just wouldn't work. She'd probably end up murdering the guy. So what other option was there? Well, she suppose she could just leave. But could she do that to her father? It was really the only thing holding her back. She didn't care about denouncing her family name and losing access to the castle, the wealth, the lifestyle. She could easily maintain her own lifestyle.

If anything, it'd be a lot better on the road.

And Lena would come with her. And Warren, too. Maybe even Cassie. Her dad would be heartbroken, though, and it wasn't like she hated him, it wasn't like he was a bad person. She understood that he was in a difficult position. But then there was her younger sister, Alyssa. Twenty six years old, good with all that 'ladylike' and good-girl behavior, (even if she was a stuck-up bitch), perfectly content to be waited on, hand and foot, and to tend house and raise kids.
