CHAPTER 16 – KNIGHT

A group of battle-medics rushed into the arena after Rhennic’s finishing strike, surrounding the Storm Dragon Elders, and Halfdir whistled low behind Layla. As he finally released her, Layla saw some of the Elders were already recovering, shifting back down to human to heal the damage of Rhennic’s last blast. But as the fight-medics checked each Elder’s heart, making them lie quiet, Layla saw two were still motionless – unconscious or even dead in the sand-arena, surrounded by sublimated glass. Shifting back down to human also, Rhennic’s eyes still blazed with that golden plasma-lightning as he moved quickly to his Elders. He was calm as he knelt with the medics, carefully examining the two who were still unconscious.

Healing them with his hands over their hearts.

“His power is something none of them can match.” Halfdir spoke quietly as he and Layla watched. “Even seven on one. Healer or fighter, my brother is a force to be reckoned with.”

“Does that worry the Elders?” Layla asked, quiet as the entire coliseum was filled with bated breath, watching to see if their Elders were going to live.

“Quite.” Halfdir rumbled back as he glanced to Layla. “Rhennic’s power has assimilated your other men’s, deeply. Even months ago, he was confiding to me about how he felt his power changing. But when he began stopping other Storm Dragon’s hearts in dominance-challenges with that gold-white lightning you just saw, no one could deny what was happening. Even though he’s not re-Bound to you yet, he’s a stronger creature than the Storm Dragons have seen in millennia, Layla – because of you. And there are a lot of them who don’t consider that a good thing.”

“They don’t want an all-powerful drake on the throne. Like King Markus Ambrose and the Crystal Dragons.” Layla breathed as she watched the woman Elder Rhennic was working on finally heave a breath and sit up, gritting her teeth and massaging her chest as if her heart hurt.

“Not one that all-powerful, no.” Halfdir spoke back, watching intently.

Rhennic was now working on the other unconscious Elder, a tall, lanky man who looked to be of Scandinavian descent. It took a while for him to come to, and when he did, he didn’t sit up but merely blinked around as if confused. Rushing a stretcher carried between two Dragons into the coliseum, the fight-medics got him on it quickly. As he was flown out of the hall, the other Elders conferred, re-donning their storm-dark robes before they faced Rhennic.

As he took a knee naked before them, bowing his head.

“Rhennic Erdhelm, Regent of the Storm Dragon Lineage,” the strong Pacific Islander man with oilslick-black scales spoke in a booming voice. “We Elders have tested your mettle today in battle and found it formidable. In terms of strength and battle-prowess, you have our unanimous approval – you are fit to be Storm Dragon King.”

A sigh issued from Layla as something deep inside her unwound – but then tightened again at the Elder’s next words.

“But
