Chapter 15
LORD TROWLEY TOOK US for a camping trip so the prince could truly get to know his kingdom.
It was kind of nice to be surrounded by nature. We had our tents set up on a large field next to a river, and I lay outside, watching the stars.
The fresh air was wonderful. So clean and light.
âThere you are,â Ryder said as he lowered himself to the ground next to me.
I turned toward him.
âThat woman over there has a really nice brooch with an emerald. I want you to take it.â
âOkay,â I said. âYour Highness.â
Having him so close to me almost made me forget who he was.
But getting the brooch was going to be easy. People would go to sleep eventually, and they probably wouldnât be wearing their jewelry when they did that.
All I had to do was watch the woman so Iâd know which tent was hers. It wouldnât be all that hard to make everyone believe the brooch with a green stone had disappeared somewhere in the green grass.
I focused on the woman so I wouldnât have to think about Ryderâs arm almost brushing mine.
She was already going for her tent, so I waited for a while. When I thought the time had come, I got to my feet.
There was a guard watching us, though. Probably to make sure the prince was safe, but it would be a problem if he kept watching me too.
I approached him. âI have to pee. Where can I do that?â
âOver there. In the woods.â He pointed behind him.
âOkay.â I slipped into the trees.
Iâd just have to circle around a bit and approach the womanâs tent from the right side so the guard wouldnât see me.
I made my way through the trees, and when I got closer to the tent, I took a good look around. No one was watching me, so I dashed to the tent.
I crouched, trying to find a way to get in. Once I found a hole that was big enough, I pushed through.
If someone saw me, Iâd just say Iâd gotten lost. Getting the brooch then would be a problem, though.
But the woman was asleep, and a closed box with ornaments was next to her feet.
As quietly and carefully as possible, I opened the box. The brooch was right on top of all the jewelry, so I grabbed it.
Then I left the box lying on its side, still open, some of the jewelry spilling out of it. It would look as if sheâd kicked the box in her sleep.
I snuck out of the tent and rushed for the trees again. When I reached the guard, I groaned.
âOh, finally!â I said. âI already thought Iâd gotten lost.â
He just eyed me carefully.
I settled back next to Ryder. My fingers brushed his as I handed him the brooch, and he slipped it into his pocket.
He got to his feet and started taking his clothes off.
Enough time had passed that his back was a lot better now, but once he was completely naked, my eyes went wide.
