Chapter 106

//Scene 1: As the investigation begins in more earnest, the trial roars to life. A great many students from the academy rush to attend, though one in particular, our very own Samson Apian, hangs back.\

“Of course I’m hanging back.” Samson shrugged. “Hero’s in a courtroom. How much trouble could he get himself into? I’m not going and sitting through a bunch of boring legal mumbo-jumbo just to chase a red herring.”

“You’re making the audience do it.” Aki appeared on his bed with a flash. “You’d think you might be sympathetic. Maybe you could go and throw a bomb into the middle of the courtroom just to spice things up!”

“More so, I need to get ahead of the author before he manages to make my life miserable.” Samson frowned. “When everything was underway looking for the infiltrator last semester, I knew clearly who he was trying to pin the blame on. I was able to manipulate evidence, and secure a good landing.”

“Has it occurred to you that maybe your influence has made the author… I don’t know… better?” Aki shrugged. “Just sit back and enjoy the ride! Be as surprised about the reveal as everyone else, and don’t worry about it all that much.”

Samson harrumphed. “And what happens when the pieces all click together and they suddenly find a huge mound of evidence pinning all the blame on me? I’ll get thrown in a jail cell to rot for the rest of the series.”

“I’ll admit, that wouldn’t be good.” Aki answered.

“Or what if the blame gets pinned on Leo? That’ll tank ratings.” Samson pressed.

“Yeah, but if it’s anyone except Leo or Hero, it’ll probably actually boost the ratings. Can you imagine what the fallout would be if Princess Perfect turned out to be a villain?” Aki grinned. “I would totally fall in love with that story arc.”

“I wouldn’t.” Samson scowled, though he did have to admit that while he didn’t like the idea personally, it might make for a good storyline.

“Look, you’re thinking about this too hard. You have some solid information. Right now, turn your attention back to helping Hero. One way or another, with all these armies, there will be a fight, and Hero will likely get thrown right into the middle of it.” Aki shrugged. “If you don’t manage to get his invincibility back by the time you unleash a dragon on the city of Somershold… Well…” She shrugged. “I’m just saying, the story is about him, so if you go and kill the thing for him, it’s not going to look too good to these precious readers we’re so desperately trying to woo.”

“That’s a fair point.” Samson grimaced, then slowly rose. “Alright, then. The last place on that particular line of inquiry was Governess Lucia of Glessmere.”

“Who probably won’t talk to you because no one is talking to anyone else.”

“Correct.” Samson sighed, then shrugged. “Well, what has to be done has to be done. Time to go see if I can manage to be an exception to the rule.
