Library and the Scent of Adolescence

I, Shijoin Haruka, was in the library after school.

Today is the day when the library committee members are on duty, and Shinhama-kun and I are working together.

"Well, I guess the problem of overdue books has been solved.”

“Yes, that's perfect. I'm sorry that I left it to Shinhama-kun to deal with the people who were upset with the strategy in the ...... broadcast," he said.

What we are talking about is the strategy that Shinhama-kun proposed, which was to use the school broadcast to call out by name those who did not return the books. The effect was extraordinary, and all books that were overdue were returned to the library. However, there were some people who were angry about the method, and Shinhama was in charge of dealing with them all.

"I had warned them beforehand, but it was a rather aggressive strategy, and it was to be expected that some of them would lose their temper. It was my responsibility to deal with them, and there was no need to feel sorry for Shijoin-san."

Shinhama-kun says this matter-of-factly, as if he is used to complaints.

"Yes! I'll go and distribute the many new books we have coming in!"

We divide our roles and begin to get to work. It was my preferred task to distribute the new books whose pages had not yet been turned. Partly because I love books, but also because it feels so good to put newly arrived books in this library space, as if I am breathing new life into them.

(Novels are good, historical books are good, now the next one is......a bit expensive ......)

The next book was a slightly geeky classic, and the highest spot on the bookshelf in the new book section, where space is usually limited due to fairly low demand, was the place to put it.

"Hmmm ......!"

I stretched my arms out with my toes up and pulled, but I couldn't reach just a little bit more. I was thinking about giving up on this one and getting a stepladder.

"Ah, let me help you."

I thought I heard a voice from behind me, and Shinhama-kun's arm reached out and gently picked up the book I had pushed to the top of the bookshelf and placed it in the desired location. And in the midst of this casual assistance - my back and Shinhama-kun's stomach were close enough to touch, and I was in a position where Shinhama-kun's face was positioned just above my head.

"I was in such a position that my face was positioned right on top of my head. Oh, sorry! I was a little too close!"

Shinhama-kun, who reached out his hand to me in a very natural movement, noticed the distance between himself and me and took a step away from me with a panicked look, as if he had committed some crime.

“I am not that flustered, I don't mind. Thanks for saving me. ......Huh?"

I suddenly notice that Shinhama-kun's behavior is more strange than it needs to be.
