Chapter Thirteen

Iris continued to stare at the shrubs. “Yes, I do believe it’s exactly what you think it is.”

Tucked behind some shrubs was Justin Cox’s bright red sports car.

Ivy Mae frowned, “Why would he go to all the trouble of parking it behind those shrubs?”

“It’s obvious, sister. He didn’t want anyone to see his car. I would guess that he parked here, took the back trail down to the garden.”

“Why?”

“I’d say he either was meeting someone back there or he was up to something.”

“Something he didn’t want anyone knowing about,” Ivy Mae agreed with her sister.

“I suppose we should call the sheriff. He obviously doesn’t know it’s back here.”

Ivy Mae moved her bike to the side of the road and climbed off. Iris watched as her sister started to tiptoe toward the car.

“I don’t think you need to tiptoe. No one’s going to hear you.”

“Smarty britches, I don’t want to leave any footprints or disturb anything.”

“Whatever you do, don’t touch anything.”

Ivy Mae turned back and scowled at her sister. “Well of course not. Why would I do that?”

“I don’t know. Why are you tiptoeing over there in the first place?” Iris mumbled.

“I can hear you.”

“I’m pulling my phone out,” Iris said.

“No, give me a minute.”

“Iris, there’s some white powder back here on the ground.”

“Don’t touch it, you don’t know what it could be.”

Ivy Mae made her way back. “I didn’t touch anything. The white powder is on the ground and sort of underneath the car. Maybe like something was dropped out of the trunk.”

“Is it okay to call the sheriff now?”

“Yes, yes Ms. Law-abiding citizen, call him.”

It didn’t take long before a sheriff’s car came around the last curve.

“You think he’s going to yell at me?” Ivy Mae asked as the car began to slow.

“From what I’ve seen in the past, yes.”

They watched the man squeeze out from behind the steering wheel. “Ivy Mae, what are you doing?”

“Now Sheriff,” Iris spoke up, “Before you start in, we were just out riding. We weren’t looking for anything. We even missed it the first time we rode by.”

“That’s right, and besides that, Iris was the one who spotted it.”

“So where is this car?”

Both ladies pointed in the direction of the shrubs that were blocking the car. The sheriff took a few steps forward until he could see the sports car. He turned back to look at the ladies. “Did you touch anything?”

“Of course not,” Ivy Mae crossed her arms. “I would never do that,” she said as frown lines creased between her eyes.

Sheriff McGuire turned his attention back to the car.

“I’m not that careless,” Ivy Mae whispered to her sister.

They watched as the sheriff checking the scene before approaching the car. He reached for his radio when he spotted the white powder below the trunk. Ivy Mae was torn between sticking around to see what she could see and hear versus leaving before she became the target of the sheriff’s wrath. Before long another deputy showed up to collect a sample of the white powder and fingerprint the car.
