Chapter 71

Anna

There was a sweet smell that crept upwards as she stirred her tea. Anna had found a window seat in the corner of the cafe, facing out towards the square. She saw a car pull up and park a short distance away and watched as a remarkably athletic older man got out. As he headed for the cafe, Anna decided that it had to be Sven. She gave him a wave. He nodded back at her and indicated that he’d join once he’d ordered at the counter.

She sat and watched him for some minutes. He wouldn’t be the first retired cop who couldn’t quit his job, she thought to herself.

He moved towards her table, careful not to spill his coffee, and smiled at her trustingly. He sat down and shook her hand. It was only an hour until closing time, and the woman behind the counter had disappeared behind a curtain. They could talk undisturbed.

‘So, let’s try to get things straight. Would you mind giving me a rundown of all that’s happened since you arrived?’

‘Yes, well, it’s only been a little while, and a lot has happened. To be honest, I don’t know whether to take all of it seriously. But now we’ve had a patient death, of course.’

Sven nodded. ‘Well, the results of the police inquiry are pending. That’s not really why I’m here today, though. If you tell me what you know, I can help you.’ He made a patient gesture for her to continue.

She told him about the message she’d received in the mail from the anonymous sender, and the photograph, which she slid over to him as she talked. Sven let it sit there. She told him about the message on her office mirror, and how it had disappeared.

‘It said something about Room 55, which doesn’t officially exist at Säter.’ She hesitated. ‘But I found some strange things when I googled this.’

Sven leant in closer. ‘Well, Anna, you’ve hit the nail on the head. There’s a longstanding rumour about a ‘secret’ room at Säter.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘We’ve long been seeking more information on what happens within the clinic, and where the decisions come from. Maybe you can be the one to help us find out more.’

‘Me?’ Anna turned away for a second and thought hard. She’d be digging her own grave if she were to start sniffing around. It would be the end of her career. She looked back at him and slowly shook her head.

‘Well, Anna, listen. There’s one favour I really need to ask of you. As soon as you’ve done this, will you please get back to me?’

He spoke in a low voice, so that Anna could only just make out his words.

When she’d heard what he said, she got goosebumps. She knew there was no going back now. The ball was rolling. There was no choice but to do as he’d asked.
