Trinity

As I watched Roman’s exceptionally fine ass move out of the bedroom, I knew I might get arrested for double homicide at a minimum. Triple homicide was a possibility, depending on what my mother had to say to me.

“Hello, Mom,” I grumbled.

She blew out a breath and silence followed. Then, “After all that, I get ‘Hello, Mom?’ Are you serious right now?”

I did a deep breath and made my voice as neutral as possible. “Why are you calling, Mom?”

“Did you really run off and get married? To a biker?”

I rolled my eyes. “I didn’t run off, but yes. I married Roman. He rides a motorcycle and is part of a club of other riders.”

I heard Roman wheeze out a chuckle before I saw him. He put a cup of coffee on the nightstand next to the side of the bed I’d slept on, and I decided he could live.

“You married someone unsavory. Why, Trinity? Good God above, why did you do that? I had plenty of men for you choose from!”

My body jerked with a suppressed laugh. “Mom, as far as I know you had Mr. Daughtry and that was it. He’s older than Dad, the father of one of my close friends, and fresh out of a nasty divorce. Anyone else you had lined up, I’m certain I had no interest in because the only damn thing they’re interested in is the money. Not me.”

“Trinity Morgan Benoit! That simply isn’t true. Things are just different when you have money.”

“You’re right about the last part, Mom. Things are different with money in the equation, and that’s exactly why those assholes didn’t give a damn about me. Sadly, you’ve been blinded by money for so long, you don’t see it either.”

She gasped. “You take that back!”

“I won’t. Because I mean it. If it wouldn’t play right into Clive’s slimy hands, I’d question Grandpa’s mind at the time of the will. Not a chance in hell I’m marrying anybody you, Dad, Clive, or Aunt M.J. thinks I should marry. Bottom line, Mom, it’s done. I’m meeting with the lawyer later today.”

Silence stretched between me and Mom.

She didn’t know I lied about meeting with the lawyer, but that didn’t matter much. I needed the certificate before I waltzed into Smith Wharton’s law office.

“When will your father and I meet him?” she asked after a long moment.

“I don’t know yet. You could text me times that would work for you and Dad. Then I can figure out which ones work for Roman.”

“Tonight, six-thirty,” Roman muttered from the other side of the bed.

I had been so wrapped up in my conversation, I hadn’t noticed he’d settled into a half-reclining position on the bed. No shirt, those tats, and the nipple rings on full display with his coffee cup held to his lips. I wanted to pounce on him.

“Roman says six-thirty tonight, if that works for you guys.”

She spluttered and choked. Finally, she rasped. “Sure. I’ll make sure your father is home by six tonight.”

“Fabulous. See you then, Mom.
