The police station was only a couple more blocks down the road I was taking but I didn’t slow down at all. The adrenaline in my guts were pumping me even further until a heart-stopping sight forced me to slam onto the brakes.

“Cassie?!” I shouted behind the wheel, seeing her with the phone placed on her ear and a frightening sight standing beside her.

“Scarlett! That’s her car, right?” she waved towards me and I stopped at the curb next to them.

“Cassie, get in the car. Now.” I was calm and firm, breathing slowly and swinging the passenger’s door wide open.

“What’s the rush, babe?” Eric placed a hand on the roof of my car and flashed a set of devilish teeth at me.

“Stay away from me.” I snapped.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Cassie raised both hands in the air.

“Yeah. What’s wrong, Scarlett?” he innocently played around.

“You know damn well what’s wrong.” I barked at Eric.

“Cassie. Get in the car please. It’s important.” I closed my eyes and looked back up at her pleadingly.

“No. Scarlett, Eric wants to talk. Why do you keep shutting him out?” she leaned towards the car and furrowed her eyebrows. Okay, now I’m confused. What’s Eric been saying about me behind my back?

“What are you talking about? He left me!” By then, had gotten out of the car and was marching towards them, standing right in Eric’s face to glare at him.

“You haven’t been returning my calls, Scarlett.” He posed a pitiful expression and I knew how bullshit it was.

“I’ll leave you two alone for a while. Talk it out, okay? I’m glad we caught you on the road. Why were you going so fast?” Cassie grabbed the keys from my hand and started walking to the driver’s side of the door.

“Cassie wait—!” I reached out to her but she had already shut the door, revved the engine and was pulling out of the curb.

“I’ll drive this back to your apartment. Eric can drive you home. Won’t you?” she looked up at him and he nodded politely, as though he was innocent.

“Cassie! You don’t understand!” I yelled out, but it was too late. I heaved a huge sigh and watched her drive off. I felt a chilling touch grab me by the elbow.

“Let’s have a talk.” He whispered into my ear menacingly, and I instantly froze at his words as he dragged me towards the other side opposite to where I was headed.

“Where are you taking me?” I shuddered as I spoke with whatever courage I had left in me.

“You’ve never been to my apartment, have you?” he smiled down at me and I swallowed hard, frightened by his grim look.

“Get in the car.” He barked and swung the door open for me to get in.

“And give me your phone.”
