Chapter 22

“You look good.” Devon said, as she eyed up the man who she hadn’t seen in five years. “Time’s treated you well, huh?” She continued, as she poured out two coffees and passed one over to him.

He was tall, with shaggy brown hair and broad shoulders. His face had a five o’clock shadow across it, which made him look manly, but not messy. His blue eyes held the same timeless knowledge that can be found when looking into the ocean, but Devon had noticed long ago that they always looked so alive in the moment.

Devon had never asked him his real name and he had never asked her for hers. Names were not a done thing in their fields of work, but nicknames worked just fine. He had always called Devon, Humming bird because he was always amused she couldn’t sit still. She had always called him floss because when she had met him, he had been a kid, tall and lanky, like a piece of dental floss. The nickname hardly seemed fitting anymore, but she wasn’t about to go changing it.

“Yeah I’ve grown up a bit huh?” Floss said, as he looked down at himself.

“You sure have.” Devon said with a smile.

“So how come we’re in, like the coldest place in the world?” Floss asked, as he took a drink from his mug and then placed it on the table.

“It’s going to sound crazy.” Devon said, as she thought about a way of explaining it.

“So you’re here for a guy you’ve just met and you’re going up against the Russian mafia to get him back?” Floss said, as a look of concern wrinkled across her forehead.

“Yeah.” Devon said, as she avoided his eyes.

“This is the same guy who came here of his own freewill, even though he said he was going to meet you at the airport?” Floss said, as though, perhaps, Devon wasn’t quite understanding the situation.

“Yeah.” Devon said. “Look I know it sounds crazy, but I know it’s the right thing to do, alright? Like, I just know.” Devon said, as she tried to mask the pain in her voice, but she couldn’t and Floss looked at her with pity in his eyes. “Don’t pity me okay?” Devon said shortly, as she saw the look.

“Sorry, it just all sounds a little high risk don’t you think?” Floss said, as he grabbed his mug back and took another drink.

“You can go home if you’re not up for it.” Devon said, as she caught his eyes and held them for a moment. She meant it. She meant every word. He could go back and not think about her again if he wanted to and she wouldn’t think any less of him for doing so.

“You know I’m not going to do that.” Floss said with a tense smile, which filled Devon with a sense of relief.

“Thank you.” She said, as her eyes warmed to his.

“It’s alright, just don’t get us killed yeah?” Floss said, as he finished off his coffee and put the mug back on the table in front of him.
