The Cowboy’s Stampede

INTRODUCTION

Ian groaned deeply, trying to rouse his sleeping body from a bed that wasn’t his. He didn’t have to open his deep cerulean eyes to know that he had about an hour before he would normally be awake. But duty called, and he knew that if he didn’t roll out of bed now, he wouldn’t have time to drive home and take the shower he desperately needed before grabbing a breakfast from Lola and heading out to the fields. He reached inside for the strength to get up and pulled his heavy, muscular body out of the bed. As Ian stepped into his pants, he threw a glance back to the blankets.

Saundra, the blond bartender that worked at Rusty’s had stretched her naked, lithe body across the spot where he was just laying. At 4 o’ clock in the morning, she was still in pretty deep slumber, like most normal people would be. Buckling his belt, he let his eyes slowly wander over Saundra. She was a real looker, all right. Long blond hair, even longer skinny legs that tapered into a small waist- and small, pink lips that often curved into a sensual pout. A lot of the guys in town, including many of his ranch hands, would kill to have the night he just had with her.

Sweat dripped off of Ian’s forehead and he wiped it away with his shirt before he threw it on. Damn was it hot in there. He looked over at the air conditioner loudly humming from her window. Walking over to it, he put his hand on the vent and felt nothing but warm air. He made a mental note to send one of his mechanics back over to fix it later today while she was at work. She may not be his soul mate, but no one deserved to suffer in this dry western heat. During the summer months, it was damn near impossible to survive without a decent air conditioner. The clock on her nightstand read 4:10 A.M. He had to be on his way if he wanted that shower. Taking one last glance in her direction, Ian raked his curly, sandy blond hair back from his eyes and put his cowboy hat on. Saundra was pretty. Hell, she was beautiful. She was smart too, and could whip up a drink so strong it could make a holy man curse. Yet, she wasn’t it. He knew it in his gut that the love he had for her wasn’t the head over heels, let’s get hitched kind of love that he was looking for.

As he drove his old blue pick up down the road and towards his ranch, he tried to think of a way of letting her down easy. To let her know that she deserved more than some ranch worker that felt ‘just okay’ when he was around her. The lights from the ranch were coming into view, and thoughts of Saundra vanished. A glowing pride crept into his heart, and Ian smiled to himself.
