I woke early, far too early. Marcus was still asleep and I was finally warm and cozy. I didn’t want to wake him up so I tried to sneak out to find some food.

“You’re up, too?” he said as I barely got a foot out of the covers.

I sighed.

“Yes. I’m still hungry and I doubt there’s much around.”

He pulled himself out of the covers.

“Wait here a moment, and if you can get that stove going it’ll save us some time.” He opened the lodge door and ran off into the snow.

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to that. A quick search produced some matches and there was plenty of wood stacked up by nearby. By the time he returned I had the little lodge warmed up. In his arms he had a couple large fish waiting to be prepared. It was a funny sight-seeing a tall naked man carrying fish.

It was still dark outside and it wasn’t much past 4 in the morning. It would be easy to fly under the radar and possibly even arrive at our destination before the sun came up at all.

And, the idea of flying on his back again was more than enough to get me aroused. So, he relented.

As I rode his back, I stared at the stars, their brilliant pinpricks of light littering the night sky illuminated the way. I thought about the future and the baby; neither of which seemed scary anymore. With Marcus here everything seemed just a little bit brighter.

With another thud I could tell we had landed again. We had arrived at my friend’s house. I wondered what she’d think of me showing up with Marcus.

I handed Marcus the clothes he’d found in the lodge and he quickly put them on. Nothing very attractive but at least he wasn’t naked anymore. I stepped up to her door and gave it a knock.

“Coming,” I heard a man say from within the farmhouse.

I waited anxiously only to be greeted with a familiar face. Tyson stood in front of me, his plain face staring me down with a wicked smile.

“You’re a hard one to track down. At least that’s what Devon tells me. You remember Devon, right?” he said.

I turned around and saw Marcus with an expression of anger like I had never seen on his face before.

“I thought I killed you.” Marcus said.

“I’m tougher than I look. You got quite close though, Cousin.” Tyson replied.

“You know each other?” I said.

They glared at each other, and I tried my hardest to avoid meeting either of their gazes.

“Tyson killed my first wife with dragon fire. I tore his throat out but he’s still talking.”

“You know Marcus; dragons are more resilient than you think. Give back Emily, I found her first. She’ll give me a son that I can pass on my legacy with. She can mate with dragons; she can revive our kind on the brink of near extinction. I’ve been looking for so long. Give her to me and you’ll never hear from me again.
