Chapter 30
Quentin finished his shift and was on his way home. He glanced at the clock on the dashboard; it was 1:00 a.m. As he pulled up to the light at the corner of East Capitol Street and Benning Road, he noticed a kid crossing the street that looked a lot like TaVon. As he got closer to the intersection, he noticed that it was, indeed, TaVon.
Quentin rolled down his window. “TaVon! TaVon!” He yelled. But TaVon didn’t hear him. Quentin turned onto Benning Road hoping to catch up with TaVon, but it was like he had disappeared. Just like that, TaVon was gone into the night. The fact that it was so late, and TaVon was out on the streets, was extremely unsettling to Quentin. He rode around for what seemed like forever, but couldn’t find TaVon anywhere.
Quentin looked at the clock on the dash-board and it was now 2:00 a.m. What is TaVon doing out this time of night? he wondered. It was obvious that he was not going to find him, so, Quentin decided to head home.
By 2:10 a.m., Quentin was home. As he approached his home, he noticed that it was completely dark. He figured Roman was either out with Skip or fast asleep. He hoped that Roman was inside, in the bed sleeping on his back, again. Quentin still had not been able to get that image out of his mind, nor did he desire to.
Quentin made his way into the house, and turned on the small lamp right next to the door.
“Roman!!! Man, you scared me half-to-death.” Roman was sitting in the chair in the corner of the room with a bottle of Patrón. It was obvious, that he’d been drinking by the look in his eyes. “Hey, Q, what’s up man?”
Quentin assumed that Roman was upset about what he had
done to Tori. He walked over and sat next to Roman. Roman sat there, clinging to the neck of the bottle, with his head hung partially down. Quentin reached for the bottle.
“Get off!!!” Roman spit out and snatched the bottle away. By now, it was obvious that Roman was actually drunk. “Get up off my Pa, Pa, Pa-thrown. Muh fuc, alwa want
what a ni, nigga got.” Though his words were slurred, Quentin
could understand him clearly.
“I don’t want what you got, Roman. I’m just looking out
for you. I’m your friend.”
“Umm hmm,” Roman, muttered.
“What’s wrong, Roman?”
“You wouldn’t understand, Q.”
“Oh yeah, try me Roman. Let me help you. Okay? I
mean, I’ve been here this far with you, haven’t I?”
Roman took another gulp from the bottle and put the cap
back on. He sat quietly for a second. Quentin knew that whatever
it was, he was hurting. This was a different side of Roman he had
never seen before. He appeared vulnerable.
“Q, they both fooled me. How could I be so stupid, man?”
Roman smacked his forehead with the palms of his hands. “Come on Roman. People get lied to all the time. I mean,
you have a good heart and you try to help people.
