Interest
Todayâs cybercitizens like technology for its own sake. As cyberspace expands, we need to remember that the users attracted to it purely because of the technology are on-line now. The next wave of new users will demand better features and more benefits, and will be less impressed by technology per se. They wonât be as caught up with computers, but will have other priorities they will expect technologies to serve. They will be more cautious, concerned about security and decency on the Internet. Cyberjargon and net-wit will nettle them. The avalanche of connections and options and information will overwhelm them.
To attract the next wave of users, cyberspace must become as effortless as possibleâeasy to get onto, easy to use. Too many choices and too much self-direction will tax consumers already overloaded and looking for shortcuts. The next wave of users, even more than the first, will want the Internet to simplify their lives, not add complexity and stress.
