Reflect on It
CHARACTER CANNOT BE DEVELOPED IN EASE AND QUIET. ONLY THROUGH EXPERIENCE OF TRIAL AND SUFFERING CAN THE SOUL BE STRENGTHENED, VISION CLEARED, AMBITION INSPIRED, AND SUCCESS ACHIEVED.
HELEN KELLER, AMERICAN AUTHOR
AND DISABILITY RIGHTS ADVOCATE
Helen Kellerâs story is one of perseverance, courage, determination, and every other word that means overcoming. This particular quote says exactly what the Bible says in Romans 5:3-4, that suffering produces perseverance and perseverance produces character. Yet who wants to suffer? No one. No one gets up in the morning saying, âLord, let me suffer today.â And certainly no one says, âLet my children suffer.â Suffering ourselves is one thing, but watching our children or grandchildren suffer is another level of misery. Someone once said a mother is only as happy as her unhappiest child. Thereâs much truth to that statement as itâs hard to be joyful when you have a child whoâs miserable.
Keeping the words to this verse and Helen Kellerâs quote in our hearts and minds will help us as we face lifeâs trials. We do want whatâs on the other side of suffering; we want perseverance and good character for us, our children, and our grandchildren. That means we have to accept the hard times as teachers of those things. Very few people have lost sight and hearing as an infant and gone through the trials Helen Keller did. Very few people have experienced what the writer of Romans suffered. Stories such as the life of Helen Keller and the life of Paul help us endure hard times. Our life stories can do the same for our grandchildren.
