Chapter Fourteen

Dane called the next morning as Serina was making a cup of coffee before starting breakfast. He was rattled with everything that happened yesterday. He had answered questions from his security people and the FBI before briefly talking to Serina. They barely started their conversation when the sheriff came in with more questions for her.

“Baby, are you okay? My God, I can’t believe anyone would put rattlesnakes in your SUV.” The horror of it hit him right in the gut. He could have lost Serina.

She tried to soothe him. “Dane I’m fine. The dogs managed to keep me from getting the door open. I can’t believe the dogs made a plan to keep me from being hurt, but that is what they must have done. There is no other explanation for their behavior. Uno and Shadow barked jumping at the door stirring up the snakes. Tia kept throwing herself on my feet to keep me from getting to the SUV. I was so mad at all of them for disobeying me, but they saved my life. If I had not decided to take them with me, I would have been in the hospital or dead.”

Dane let out a breath in frustration. “I’m going to feed them all T-bone steak for life.”

Serina laughed, “They are spoiled enough as it is. Is everything ok there? Dan’s buddies have got this place as secure as Fort Knox.”

Dane sighed, “You are worth more to me than all the gold in Fort Knox, Serina. You have to be safe.”

Serina knew Dane was hurting, feeling guilty. “Dane none of this is your fault. The woman is obviously deranged. Her mind has probably been broken for a long time. Dan has everything under control here. I don’t think anyone else will get on the property without getting to know your security guys personally. I think they’re more upset over the snakes than I am, and I’m pretty freaked out about it. You need to be careful too. If she thinks she took care of me, you may be next.”

Dane paused in thought before answering. “You may be right. I hope she does come after me. Security is tight here. If she makes a move on me or anyone in the band here, they will get her.”

Serina looked at the clock on the wall and realized she was supposed to have a conference call in ten minutes with the tech company to run some ideas past them. “Dane I need to go. I’ve got a conference call in ten minutes. I need to get my agenda, so I hit all the right points. Call me later if you get some time. I know you’re busy practicing, so don’t worry if you don’t have time. We can talk tomorrow. Be careful Dane. I miss you.”

Dane and the band ate breakfast then headed back downstairs to rehearse. Things were going well. After being together for years they could put together a finished song quickly. Then they would practice until it was a perfectly polished production.
