CHAPTER SIX

‘SAUL?’ Stephanie’s voice was amused and astonished.

Her brother lifted his head. Blazing eyes the rare, clear colour of a sapphire took in the letter in her hand. ‘What is it?’

‘It’s from a man who wants to name a rose after me. He says it’s exactly the same colour as my hair. How does—’ she consulted the expertly typed letter again

‘—Adam Cowdray know what colour my hair is?’

Saul’s eyes sharpened. ‘Adam Cowdray?’ he said softly, and flicked a glance at his heavily pregnant wife, who was slowly consuming a piece of toast with an absent, inward expression. ‘Dear heart, have you heard of a rose-breeder called Adam Cowdray?’ he asked.

Candace, in the seven years since she had married Saul, had transformed the gardens of the various Jerrard residences around the world into recognised showpieces. The glorious tropical vista that spread around them now was a tribute to her skill. The English accent she had picked up from her husband and sister softened and deepened by the underlying New Zealand drawl, she answered, ‘Of course I’ve heard of him. Met him, too. The firm’s a New Zealand institution, but it’s known worldwide. His father produced some wonderful flowers. Maniopoto was one of his, and First Dawn, and rumours have it that the son has inherited his eye and his skill at breeding. Cowdray roses usually do better in milder climates, although his Hinemoa was a real hit at Chelsea a couple of years ago.’ Mischief curled her mouth. ‘So was the man. Even my unsusceptible heart went pitter-pat, while Lavinia Potts-Neville almost dropped at his feet. One of those magnificent males who don’t look as though they’ve just stepped out of Gentlemen’s Quarterly!’

Saul’s brows shot up. ‘Did you like him?’

‘Oh, yes. He was very pleasant, and didn’t freeze me off as abruptly as he did all the others. Although that was probably because he’s a New Zealander too. We Kiwis stick together.’

‘It could also be that you’re very beautiful,’ Saul said, the hint of steel in his tone sending Stephanie’s brows upwards in turn.

It still surprised her that he could show jealousy, even though he knew that his wife was as besotted with him as he was with her.

‘Only in your eyes,’ Candace said amiably, but something in her tone, in her eyes made Stephanie feel an intruder.

She should, she thought as she put the letter down and picked up a mango, be accustomed to it by now. Although she had her own apartment in London, she spent a lot of time with her brother and his wife and family in the house in the Home Counties that had been the Jerrards’ base for centuries. And when Candace had decided that she would like this baby to be born in Fala’isi, the idyllic island in the South Pacific where they holidayed at least once a year, Stephanie had offered to come too, so that as the last months passed Candace would have company. Although Saul stayed close to his wife at all times, in his position some travel was essential.
