THE FACTORY FLOOR
Large machines can be programmed to perform specific tasks in factories, mines, and other industrial settings. These types of machines have been around since the 1950s. They have been refined in their design, but they are simply programmed to do the same thing, over and over.
Robotic arms mimic the motions of a human hand. The arms can grasp and hold components, as well as use tools to perform tasks such as welding metal. Others were first designed for more gentle uses. The Rancho Arm was first developed in 1962 at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in California to assist people who were disabled and who were staying at the hospital. It had six different joints and could be used to grasp, pick up, and move items. Stanford University bought the arm in 1963.
