Chapter 3

A GOOD MAN

Roberto Clemente is known for being a great baseball player. He was also a great person. His life outside of baseball was dedicated to making the world a better place. He knew he had a lot of fame, power, and money. He could have used those things for selfish gain. Instead, he used them to help others.

A Good Heart

Even as a kid, Clemente was known for helping others. He didn’t get in trouble, and he helped out when he could.

Later, when he became a professional baseball star, he continued to do good works. One of the very first things he did when he started making money was buy his parents a nice house. They had raised him without much money. He wanted to give back to them somehow and thank them for being good parents.

He was well known for making donations to charity. He taught baseball to kids. He tried to make his hometown of Carolina a better place. He was always busy giving back.

The End

Clemente’s most famous charity work was also his last. On December 23, 1972, an earthquake shook Managua, the capital of Nicaragua. Thousands of people died or were hurt. Thousands more lost their homes and their jobs. They needed help.

Clemente had a special connection to Nicaragua. He had recently managed a Nicaraguan amateur baseball team. He cared about the country and its people. Some of Clemente’s friends had also died in the earthquake.
