WIRE WATER STRIDER

SUPPLIES

*roll of thin, plastic-coated wire

*sharp scissors or wire cutters

*large bowl or sink with cold water

*paperclips

Water striders are insects that walk on the surface of water. You can make your own water strider!

Caution: Ask an adult to help you cut the wire.

1Cut a 12-inch piece of wire. Bend the piece of wire into a flat design to make your water strider.

2Fill the bowl or basin with cold water and let it rest until the water’s surface is still.

3Gently place your water strider vertically into the water. What happens?

4Take the water strider out of the water, shake off any excess water, and wait for the water surface to become still again.

5Gently place your water strider flat on the surface of the water. What happens?

6Try placing a paperclip on top of your water strider. How many paperclips can it hold above the water?

THINK ABOUT IT! How can you change the shape of your water strider to hold as many paperclips as possible above the water?
