Chapter Nineteen

Lena awoke with a start, Mary was shaking her body back and forth.

“Lena. Lena, wake up. Lena!”

Lena opened her eyes to see her mother’s panicked face before her. She quickly sat up in bed.

“What? What’s wrong?”

“Where is your sister?” Mary asked, worry trailing in her voice.

“Oh. She’s at Sarah’s. Don’t worry. She said she would be home at 9:00PM.”

Lena rolled back over, pulling the covers over her head. Mary ripped the comforter away from her daughter.

“Lena, its 10:15PM! She is not here and I already called over to Sarah’s. She hasn’t seen Gabby since dinnertime!”

Lena quickly jumped out of bed, surprised that she had slept for so long.

“What do you mean? I saw Sarah pick her up.”

“I called and spoke with Sarah and her mother. They both said that Gabby went over for dinner and then left with a man. Neither of them knows who he was. Sarah’s mother thought it was Gabby’s boyfriend, but Sarah says she doesn’t think Gabby has a boyfriend!”

“What? Did you try calling Gabby’s cell phone?”

“Only a million times, Lena. It keeps going to voicemail. Do you think I should call the police?”

Lena’s mind swam with worry.

“No, not yet at least. Let’s go downstairs and make some phone calls.”

Both of the women went downstairs and sat at the kitchen table. Mary frantically called Gabby over and over again, unsuccessfully.

“I am going to ground her for such a long time when she gets home, that girl has no idea what she’s in for!” Mary’s temper was showing. She rarely became this upset unless it came to the safety of her children.

“Mom, just calm down. We don’t know what’s going on yet.”

“I’m calling Richard.”

Lena quietly sat at the kitchen table, sipping the tea she had just made for herself.

“What? No protest from you?”

Lena glanced up at her mother.

“No, Mom. Go ahead and call him. I don’t know what it is that he will do, but if it makes you feel better, go ahead.”

Mary dialed Richard's phone number and told him that Gabby wasn’t home yet. He said he would be right over. Lena continued to sit at the table, wondering whether or not she should give Will a call. That reminded her that she hadn’t yet told her mother of her planned trip to Moravia the next morning. Lena decided now was not the time. Mary was frantic with a mix of worry and anger, Lena didn’t feel that changing the subject would be the best idea. Lena was looking forward to being out of town the next day. She knew the amount of trouble her younger sister would be in when she arrived home and she was grateful to not have to deal with Gabby’s pouty teenage attitude once she realized she was grounded. Will had been so right; somehow he always knew what was best for her. He accurately assumed she needed a break and at just the right time. All of the stress of the John Roberts case had been such a heavy burden upon both of them that their trip to Chatham-Kent would be a welcome escape.
