The floor bounced. Freya’s head bumped from the floor and fell again with a thud.

“Ow.” She sat up. Her hands were tied. Her ankles were tied too. The world around her was thumping along.

Her head cleared, slowly. She was moving. The world was quite still, but she was moving. She squinted ahead of her. She was lying in a big wooden wheelbarrow. The tall, red-haired man was pulling it along. Ahead of him were the other two, with sacks and backpacks and poles strapped to their backs.

She found Finn’s head near her hands. She gave his head a little shove. “Wake up,” she said.

He rolled over, and Freya gasped.

Finn’s face was swollen and bruised. One eye was blacked. His nose had been bleeding, but now dry blood stained his upper lip and the fine stubble above it. He didn’t wake up. For a moment, Freya feared the worst.

She lay down next to him and put her bound hands on his cheeks. The wheelbarrow hit a hard bump. Finn woke up and groaned.

“Guh,” he said.

Freya smiled. “They’re taking us somewhere,” she said.

He nodded, just a tiny bit. He muttered something. Freya couldn’t make it out. His voice was deep and gravelly, like he was trying to talk through a bowl of mud.

“What?” she whispered. Their faces were inches apart. The wheelbarrow hit another bump.

“A tent city,” he said. “They’re going to sell us at a tent city.”

“Sell us?”

“You remember the man upstairs?” he asked.

Of course she did. His ugly face showed up every time she closed her eyes, pushing and pulling Kat away from her.

“Well,” Finn went on, “someone just like him is about to buy you from these three for a gallon of fuel.”
