“After our meal, let’s hurry to our cabin and get some rest. We’ve got a long day ahead of us tomorrow,” said Selena.

“That’s fine with me,” Alicia said. Nate and Tyson nodded in agreement.

CHAPTER 7

A CHANGE OF PLANS

The next morning after breakfast, the Wave Riders, along with the other teams, prepared for the race. As all the teams waited by their rafts, an official started to speak into a megaphone.

“Good morning! When the race begins, each team leaves in the order they arrived. With the exception of the first-place team, the Water Wizards—”

The official was cut off by the Water Wizards loud cheering. She continued with instructions once the Wizards finally quieted down.

“Teams two through eight must wait according to how many minutes they’re behind the first-place team,” the official said. “Today’s part of the race is the second and third leg, which will complete the race. Good luck, everyone!”

As the Water Wizards left and paddled away, Nate, Selena, Alicia, and Tyson began to wonder if there was any way that they would have a chance to win. The other teams, excited to get back in the race, began to leave within minutes of each other.

“We’ve got a half-hour wait until we can go. We’ll need to be quick if we want to catch up to the others,” Nate said. He was clearly impatient and kept pacing back and forth on his side of the raft.

“And how exactly are we going to catch up to the other teams? We can’t exhaust ourselves like we did yesterday,” said Alicia, shaking her head.

“I might have an idea that can help us win,” said Selena.

“What is it? Spill!” Alicia said.

Selena pulled a map of the race from her pocket. “We’ll have to wait to talk about our plan until the other teams leave. We need some privacy,” Selena said pointing to her map.

“If you’re thinking what I think you’re thinking, I’m willing to bet it’s a bad idea,” said Tyson.

“Since when does Selena have bad ideas?” asked Nate, looking excited. “Let’s keep a cool head and hear her out once the other teams leave.”

“Fine,” said Tyson. “But I remember when Selena thought it was a good idea to ride the roller coasters after we all had hot fudge sundaes at the amusement park, and we all know what happened after that.”
