Chapter 16

The bar was hopping. Victoria sat on a barstool, nursing a beer, waiting for filming to begin. The male contestants were on the opposite side of the bar, grouped together like they were at a junior high dance. There was a sprinkling of town residents who were hired as extras. As if this was a movie and not “reality” dating.

Victoria was grateful for Payton’s help to select her outfit. It turned out she’d brought nothing suitable for a country dancing night out. Payton took one look at her in her fancy dress and cowboy boots and steered her right back into the bedroom to change. “You’re in Montana, Vic, not some fancy California club.”

She should have hated the nickname. She usually insisted on being called Victoria. Something about the way Payton said the endearment made it acceptable. Like she really cared about Victoria and wanted to be close to her.

And she couldn’t argue Payton’s fashion sense. Every head in the bar turned as soon as she walked in. She’d borrowed a pair of Payton’s denim shorts, which were extra short as Victoria was taller than the petite Payton. Victoria had added a dark navy tank of her own that was studded with rhinestones in a heart shape. She wore her own dark brown cowboy boots. She looked every inch the Montana cowgirl.

She hadn’t seen Owen when she arrived. She figured he didn’t need to be here as they weren’t heading out into the wilderness. Her heart sank at the realization she wouldn’t see him tonight. Somehow, he’d become her touchstone at these events. A simple shared look or smile to relax her. Tonight it seemed she was on her own.

She heard the call to take their places. She didn’t move as she hadn’t been given direction beyond sit at the bar with her beer. As soon as the cameras rolled, she watched the men mingle with the crowd, until one broke from the group and walked towards her. It hadn’t seemed like they’d discussed the order of approaching her, so she wondered if the producers had given some sort of instructions. She’d be letting another five men go tonight as they drew closer to the last show.

“Care to dance?” The question came from one of the nameless contestants she’d talked with but couldn’t seem to remember.

Grateful for the excuse to avoid conversation, she agreed. Standing up, she placed her hand in his outstretched one and allowed him to lead her to the dance floor. When his clammy hand clasped hers, Victoria held back a shudder. The band played a two-step, and the man pulled her frenetically around the dance floor. She had to dodge his large feet several times to avoid her toes being squashed. When the dance ended, she was flooded with relief.

“Thanks for the dance,” she said and started back to her perch on the barstool. It wasn’t meant to be, however, as the next man stepped forward to offer his hand. Another awkward turn around the floor and then she was handed off to the third contestant.
