Assessing Threats Using FMEA

You can use Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, or FMEA, to assess organizational threats. This technique can help you identify and prevent product and process problems before they occur.

When using FMEA to assess threats, you move through three stages. Stage one is to assign rankings for severity, occurrence, and detection to the effects of each risk you've identified.

Stage two is to calculate the risk priority number – or RPN – for each risk. The RPN can be calculated using the formula severity ranking times occurrence ranking times detection ranking.

Stage three is to prioritize the risks for action. They should be ranked in order, from the highest risk priority number to the lowest.
