Lito poured himself a goblet of wine as he dropped into his favourite chair that looked out over the Colar sea. Taking a small sip of the liquid, he let his mind wander to the last few months and to Kai. The crown prince of Colar. It pained him to admit that the faerie was a better candidate than he had first thought. He had expected Kai to be like his father. Cold and heartless. But The Guild had trained it out of him, made him into a worthy candidate for the throne. It was just a shame he wasnât going to make it.
The temperature in the room dropped. The light fading, encouraging the shadows to form a figure, Lito was surprised to see. He had thought he was doing a good enough job without the nagging of his mother.
âYou are a fool to risk being seen, mother,â Lito warned her.
âAnd you are a fool for letting your glamour drop. Kai is no idiot. He is a warrior, Darcel. He can see straight through tricks,â the voice spoke from the depths of the shadows.
âHow many times have I told you not to call me by name while I am here in the palace? Do you not remember the amount of ears this place has? How you got caught the first time. And I donât know what you are talking about. I have been sure to keep my glamour flawless. And itâs exhausting,â Darcel snapped.
âYour eyes betrayed you. The darkness flickered for the briefest of moments. So, I have been told. But that moment would have been enough for Kai to question you.â
âWell, he didnât. I should be angry at you for sending the raven to spy on me, and for risking this entire operation by coming here to scold me about something that hasnât even happened,â Darcel said.
âYou need to be watched. You may have done what I asked of you at the autumn court, but you need to do more to spread the word of my uprising. I need you to be in the taverns of Colar. Turning the people not only against my brother, but also Kai. That warrior cannot take our throne. The summer court belongs to us just as the shadow court doesââ
âIt wonât be easy convincing the people to turn against Kai. He is easy to like, and he is a member of The Elite,â Darcel pointed out.
âDo not interrupt me, Darcel. You will do as I ask. You may be my son, but that doesnât mean I canât turn you into the summer court. That they can find you out for being a traitor all these years.â
âIâm not your son. I belong here and the summer throne belongs to me. You have trained me to be your weapon. It is me who controls this court, and itâs people. I will continue with what I am doing. Go back to your shadows, mother,â Darcel ordered.
He knew she was about to say something more, but a knock at the door spooked her, and the shadows vanished.
