Chapter Thirteen: Forget The Flowers

Rylan

Nurses ran into the room.

Sofia was in distress as she moved around on the bed in panic and I had to let go of her hand to let them help her.

Dr. Robins came in. “What happened?” he asked as he rushed over.

I never got to answer as he told the nurses to hand him the oxygen and he needed 1 cc of midazolam. A nurse took out a tiny bottle and filled a syringe to give to him. He placed the oxygen mask on Sofia’s mouth and then turned to grab the syringe as he swiftly injected it into Sofia’s IV.

The beeping was still rapid, but after a minute or two, it finally slowed down. Then Sofia went still.

Dr. Robins gave the nurse more instructions and she left the room. Turning to me, he motioned me to the door, away from the bed. “What the hell happened?”

I felt awful now. “I shouldn’t have told her anything but she kept after me. She wanted to know what happened.”

“And that sent her into shock all over again,” he stated and it was not a question.

I nodded. “She seemed fine until…”

“What?”

“I told her about the man that had her on that tractor.” I shook my head. “I should have just stopped talking.”

Dr. Robins patted my arm. “Maybe she remembered something. That could have done it.”

I hadn’t taken my eyes off of her as he talked.

“She will be out a while,” he told me.

I nodded. “It’s better than her getting so upset.” I still felt like shit about upsetting her before.

“Let’s get your blood drawn. The nurse is setting that up.”

“As long as it is here,” I replied.

“You still think she’s in danger?” he asked.

I finally removed my gaze from Sofia and turned my head to glare at him. “We all are until someone kills this O.”

He stared at me. “O?”

I nodded. “Supposedly, that is what she is called by her minions at least. One girl…” I thought about Cinnamon. Talon had taken her to the ranch, but who knew where she and the family were now.

“One girl?” Dr. Robins asked. “What?”

“Said she called herself Ophelia.”

The doctor paused. “Like Shak—”

“Yes, like Shakespeare but it doesn’t help us at all.”

“What else do you know about this um…O woman?”

I shrugged and turned my gaze back to Sofia lying still in the hospital bed. “She said something about Hamlet. Hell, I don’t remember those old plays. Who does?”

The doctor chuckled. “I do.”

I again looked over at him. “Do you think it could tell us who she is? A play?” I scoffed.

“It might be more important than you think. You see Ophelia was a female who was controlled by the men in her life. Hamlet, then her brother and father. She loved Hamlet and he supposedly loved her. Although later on, he saw her acts of loyalty to her family as a betrayal after they killed his father. One moment he says ‘I did love you once,’ then he says, ‘I loved you not.’
