STAGE ONE—RECONNAISSANCE
Up to this point, we’ve covered many of the foundational aspects of becoming a star candidate. It was important to reflect on the process and think about who you are before you started working on the interview. It is due to a lack of foundation that so many candidates bomb the interview and extend their job search. You have the vital qualities to become a star candidate, so now we can explore stage one with increased confidence.
Reconnaissance is another word for research, and research is another word for digging. Average candidates use a big shovel to dig at this stage in the process. This poses problems. Star candidates dig with a spoon a little bit at a time and are much better at adapting their conversation because of their preparation.
Grabbing a spoon and gathering small pieces is better than trying to force the company research and job search preparation process all at once. Pay attention to all of the details as well as the process. Rip the Resume is written like a building block—one step precedes and is just as important as the next. Don’t skip ahead and try to take shortcuts. Do your research on the company. When the time has been put in, it will show.
Everyone is all excited when getting a call to come in for an interview, whether with a recruiting firm or with the company directly. Granted, it is very exciting! Choose not to be just any regular candidate though. You’ve already researched the company you want to be a part of. It is just as important for you to familiarize yourself with the recruiting firm as any other objective that you have tackled.
Knowing that I represent both the candidate and the client shows that you took the time to research and find out about me, the recruiter. So, for instance, know that The Torin Ellis Brand is a human capitalist strategist, diversity ambassador, interview architect, and consultant to a number of well-respected brands and companies. That is just one part of it. Learn what the recruiter’s level of expertise is. To be clear, my brand does all of the following regarding a candidate: coaching, sourcing and scouting talent, working with the media, participating on panels, and providing talent strategy services. It is an added bonus for you to know the relevance of the mission of my firm. We have a concentrated focus on diversity and inclusion and a profound respect for differences in perspectives, cultures, and overall life experiences.
How is knowing this information a step up for you? It prepares you to come well-equipped for the next phase in conquering the hiring process. Take the opportunity to seize all that lies in front of you. Do the research and learn about the business.
Everything that you have put in place to be successful just makes the conversation flow better when you do get called in for an interview. The meeting shouldn’t feel like a deposition. Being a better prepared candidate leaves an interviewer feeling no added pressure because the interview is inviting and engaging.
