Riley

I slide into the booth across from Rohan clutching my tray full of food. Our legs touch under the table, and even through the fabric of my sweatpants I feel a warm shiver spreading through my body.

He doesn’t move his legs and so I keep mine there too, wondering if he feels this physical pull too.

“What’s your favorite burger?” he asks, unwrapping his double Big Mac.

I take a bite of mine and chew thoughtfully.

“I love a good Big Mac, obviously, but if we’re talking all-time favorite, the double chicken burger from Christie’s diner in town.”

He raises his eyebrows. “I’ve never tried the chicken burger.”

My eyes go wide. “You’re kidding me? It’s with double chicken breast, and they do this special chili mayo.” I roll my eyes heavenward. “It is heavenly. I’ll have to take you there sometime.” The words come out of my mouth before I know what I’ve said.

His eyes sparkle. “Done. You can take me there on Saturday.”

I kick him under the table, and his hand grabs my leg. It’s like a shock of heat charging through my body. My breath catches in my throat, and I go wobbly between the legs.

“You’re very persistent.” But my voice comes out small, almost like a whisper.

He’s looking at me intently, his dark eyes boring into mine, and the grip on my leg doesn’t let up.

“When I see something I want, I don’t stop till I get it.”

There’s a rush of dampness between my legs. There’s something about his arrogance that’s deeply attractive. But it is still arrogance.

I reach under the table and lift his hand off my leg.

“You won’t get what you want from me.” I drop his hand onto his own leg and pointedly move my legs away from his so they’re not touching.

It’s clear he’s only after one thing here, and even though my body is screaming for him, I’m not going to give myself away so easily.

He leans back in his chair and chuckles. “I think you have the wrong idea about what it is I want.”

I eye him archly. “I think I know exactly what you want.”

He gives me a lopsided smile, and his eyes are dancing like there’s some joke that I’m not in on. “We’ll see.”

Well, he can have his own private joke in his head. I’m going to enjoy my lunch. I take another bite of my burger.

“My favorite burger is my mom’s homemade turkey burgers.” He picks up the conversation like the last awkward few minutes never happened. “I’ve been trying to get the recipe from her, but she says she won’t give it out till I’m married. Some kind of family tradition. She got it from her mom on her wedding day, who got it from her mom...” He waves his hand in the air. “I expect on my wedding day instead of a cake there’ll be a stack of turkey burgers with the recipe hidden in the middle.”

I snort–laugh, causing a piece of pickle to fly out of my mouth. Which makes me go crimson, but Rohan doesn’t seem to mind.
