Chapter Eleven

Nate and I walked hand-in-hand over to the island's little movie theater. It had only one screen and Seaside only got the second run movies. On the plus side, they usually cost $2 and made for a super cheap date night.

As Nate and I walked into the auditorium, I noticed that Lottie and Trevor were sitting together in the middle of the theater, snuggling and talking.

Nate took a deep breath.

Before everything that had happened, Trevor had said some awfully terrible things about him during the debates. And while Lottie and I had made up, she and Nate had not had an opportunity to clear the air.

And now we were all in the same room together for the next two hours.

"We can leave..." I offered.

He shook his head and squared his shoulders. "I think that maybe we'll just let them enjoy their time on their own and I'll enjoy not going over and trying to pretend everything is okay."

However, the auditorium wasn't that big. Someone dropped their popcorn and Trevor turned back to see what the noise was about.

And that's when he spotted us.

I saw him lean his head in and mutter something to Lottie and she gave him a soft little kiss and muttered something in return.

His head leaned back in his seat and he took a big sigh before pushing himself out of his chair. He began walking our direction, hands in his pockets.

He stopped in front of our seats.

"You make a better window than a door!" I said to him.

His brow furrowed. "What?"

"Your body being in between our eyeballs and the screen is going to make it very difficult for us to watch the movie."

He looked like he was ready to walk away, but then he stopped himself and focused on Nate rather than my brutally honest bad attitude.

"Thanks for getting me out of the way of that light," he said begrudgingly.

Nate gave him a tight-lipped smile. "Well, I would hate for anything to happen to you. Or to anyone on Seaside."

"Yeah. There's been a lot of stuff that happens here."

I bit my tongue that part of that was Trevor's uncle being a serial killer. But who was keeping score?

"Also," he said, rubbing the back of his head. "You know all those things I said were just politics, right?"

Nate was friendly, but also not willing to sweep everything under the rug. "That's not how things are done here. You'd know that if you had spent any time with us at all."

"I spend lots of time with everyone," he protested. "I run the bar, remember? I didn't say anything everyone isn't thinking."

I looked at him. "That's what people are thinking?"

"I mean, they're usually a few drinks in, but yeah..." He shrugged. "Anyway, thank you for saving me and nothing personal about the stuff I said at the debate."

And then he walked away.

"I think if I aim well enough, I could hit the back of his head with my popcorn during the entire movie," I said, pulling out a kernel and eyeing its trajectory if I let it loose.
