Rick and Rita followed Stan through the winding path to the secret door. They tried to open it, but it wouldn’t budge. Stan reached his curved hands around the edge of the door and gave it a tug. Still no luck. Finally, he pounded on the door with his little hooked fists. He was about to remove it from its plastic hinges.

A voice from inside called, “Do you mind?”

“Who’s that?” asked Rick.

“How am I supposed to know?” Stan responded.

They heard the toilet flush. Then it flushed again. Stan looked at Rick. Rick looked at Rita. The door opened. A man in a Parks Service uniform walked out.

“Geez. Give a guy a break.” The man walked away muttering.

Once he was out of sight, Rick, Rita, and Stan checked to see if anyone was watching, then they all stepped inside the bathroom. It was very close quarters.

“So, how does this thing work?” asked Rick.

“Hold on just a second, and I’ll show you,” said Stan. “Patience, my boy.”

Stan hooked the edge of a trapdoor in the floor with his hands and pulled it open.

“Oh, wow! That’s funny,” said Rita, breathing a sigh of relief. “You know, I thought that the portal was going to actually be in the toilet.”

“Oh, this isn’t the portal. I’m just adjusting the water flow,” Stan said.

“Oh,” Rita said, disappointed.

“Hop in, Rick,” said Stan.

Rick looked inside the black toilet bowl. “Ladies first?” he said to Rita with a timid gesture.

“I don’t think so, Boss,” said Rita.

“Oh, so I’m the boss when it comes to being flushed down a toilet, huh?” Rick said. “Why don’t you go first, Stan? You know the way.”

“Do you know how to operate the fluid-based time oscillator, Rick?” asked Stan.

“I’d like to think so,” said Rick.

“Well, I’m not going anyway,” said Stan.

“What?” Rick and Rita said, almost at the same time.

“Someone has to hold down the fort here,” said Stan. “Besides, I get awful motion sickness. Just follow my instructions and you should be okay.” He handed Rick a hefty instruction book.

“Fine,” said Rick. He and Rita reviewed the book quickly.

“We won’t get stuck in another time period, will we?” asked Rita.

“Hold onto the instructions and you should be okay. They can help you out of any situation,” said Stan. “Now, Rick . . .” He gestured toward the toilet.

Rick removed a spray bottle of disinfectant from the supply closet. He gave the bowl a thorough spritz.

“I assure you that’s not necessary,” said Stan.

“Says the man who’s staying behind,” Rick grumbled. He gingerly stepped into the toilet and held his nose. Stan put his hand on the flusher and gave it a firm push. He held it down and counted, “One, two, three . . .”

Rick didn’t hear the rest. It was muffled by the clatter of blue and clear studs in the bowl. He felt a strong pulling sensation and heard Rita’s voice in the distance.

“See you soon!” she called.

Rick wondered if he really would.
