“Dax.” Dax was slumped down in the hard chair they’d directed him to in the lobby. His boots were stuck to something on the floor and when he opened his eyes to the sound of Harley’s voice, they burned against the air that hit them. He had a feeling that wasn’t all that was about to burn. Harley had her arms folded across her chest and a fire in her green eyes that Dax had never seen there before.

“Hey, Harley...”

“Fuck that. Don’t you ‘hey, Harley’ me!” Her voice was low, but there was no denying the burning anger in it. Dax looked around. The lobby wasn’t crowded but there were at least three other people there, waiting for something. The cop who had been behind the desk when Dax came in had gone home, and there was another, even more disinterested one in his place. His eyes landed back on Harley as he straightened himself up in the chair. Still whispering she said, “How long have you been here? When were you going to call me? I was sitting at home with our son, thinking my old man was splattered across the pavement somewhere, when I found out...and not from you...that he’s been hauled down to the police station.” She was talking so fast that Dax didn’t bother trying to interrupt. He waited until she stopped to take a breath and then he stood up and said:

“I was going to call you as soon as I knew what was going on. How did you find out he was here?”

“I called her,” David said. Dax looked up at his brother-in-law as he stepped out from behind the counter. The cop that was on duty there now looked at the three of them with interest, but when Dax shot a glare in his direction, he turned his back to them and pretended to be busy. Dax looked back over at David, and the police tech’s green eyes seemed to be filled with the same kind of fire that Harley’s were. Dax hadn’t felt so ostracized in a long time. He seemed to have effectively pissed everyone in his life off in one day. He turned back to Harley and said:

“I’m really sorry. I should have called you.”

“Damn right you should have.” Harley looked like she was trying to hold back tears as she said, “I thought he was dead.”

Fuck. “I’m sorry, Harley, really.” Dax took a step toward her, thinking he might comfort her, but she held up her palm and shook her head before stepping up to the counter behind them. She rapped her palm on the Formica and said:

“Excuse me! Can I get some help here?” The officer turned back around but before he spoke David gave him a nod, put his hand softly on her arm, and said:

“Why don’t you have a seat and I’ll go back and let Detective Zandt know you’re here.”

She turned on David and looked like she wanted to argue, but a tear escaped and rolled down her cheek and she wiped it away instead and said, “Tell him Cody’s attorney is here.
