CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Rafael

D ust, grime, shadows…they watched me as I paced back and forth like a caged creature. My thoughts spun relentlessly over the situation in my city, in my house. More bodies had turned up either bled of blood or life yet the rogues still managed to elude us and this failure shredded my pride. I could summon the magic to hunt them down, I could unearth their entire network if I drew from my coven’s powers…but we should be able to find them without such extreme measures, measures that would leave us drained and useless for days. What good would finding them be if we were too weak to destroy them? We’d leave the Malinche and the city vulnerable without our protection. My coven would be vulnerable, the coven that had become like a family to me. With any cleverness in their brains, the rogues could wipe us out and take over the city. Maybe even the state.

Perhaps I should trust my coven more and sacrifice my own well of magic to root them out, yet the leader in me couldn’t stand the thought of becoming a comatose burden and not fight by their side. I could request help from other covens, but that would leave their own territories vulnerable and who knew how widespread this rogue coven had reached its clawed corruption? With a stronger, larger, and deeper-rooted coven, we could handle the task, but the Malinche had suffered too long before I stepped in and as it stood they could not afford a fight without me.

And then there’s Selah Paxton. They wanted her and though I reminded myself to be wary of the American, I did know that if the rogues wanted her then I must do everything I could to keep her from them. She’s serious yet carefree, loving and trusting. She’s innocent, too innocent, and I blamed the Equoni for this. They’re hiding something and I wondered if they hadn’t then maybe Selah could take care of herself instead of ignorantly waltzing into trouble left and right.

Still, even though I’d chosen to protect Selah from the rogues it did not mean that I could trust her. I kept finding myself bending towards her, glancing at her to see if she’s smiling, wondering what she’s thinking. There’s a warm, addicting quality to her personality that I found myself craving the more time I spent with her. Until I figured out who or what she was, however, that was too dangerous a craving to indulge. Demons created chaos with their possessed, but there had been those known to lie in patient wait to seize a greater opportunity and what better playground could one ask for than me? To cut me down, watch me fall, was an old quest and if they were to use Selah to do it they just might succeed and then we’d all fall one by one.

No. I would stay away from her, remind myself the danger she was as an unknown. I was known to be ruthless and instead I’d been indulgent.
