HIS HEART DRUMMED ON his chest in uncharacteristic rhythmic movements. This man, though he’d put up a façade, could do him harm.
He’d said his name was Jodex. He was a talkative, an annoying one at that. He had started talking from the moment they left Mr. Leggon’s. He rarely stopped save for the times when he had to shake off the sand that clung to his sandals or wipe off sweat from his brows.
Jodex showed no sign of concern that he might be found out. Here, there were very few trees to mask his approach. He had to command much respect, much dignity to keep people out of his way. Here was another reason to suspect that he wasn’t what he was trying to portray.
Vince found that his body was getting unstuck the more distance they covered. Yet, he felt a tingling numbness at his palms and feet. For such little quantity of whatever the potion had been, it was insanely productive.
Another sad effect of the potion was that his rage refused to dissipate. He could feel it hiding under the surface, only not acting because of the numbness.
The sand scented nicely. It was a welcome distraction from the many bad ideas his mind was conjuring to do with this idiot once the spell had faded.
“I know this is hard to take in, but you’ll soon discover that I am doing you a favor. The rage helps no one. Soon, it will consume you, consume your every good memory until you have sadness as your only emotion.”
Vince wanted to ask what he’d do with the rage once he got it but feared there could be a change in the way the man had been dealing with him. There could be nothing right with the way he was going to use it. He might have learned the best way to control it and would want to use it for himself.
Binders, he’d learned, had no good intentions. He had even heard Mr. Leggon say they are the worst creatures in all of the Outworld.
“When the rage is out of you, I will send you back to the place you came from. I know you’ve been itching to get back. I can make that happen.”
Vince wondered if Jodex could hear his thoughts. He had done an excellent job of cloaking them so far. It would be a surprise, a new development if that were the case.
They reached a house deep in what looked like the only wood in this place. The roof had started coming off. The walls had no color, and when the doors creaked, Vince thought they were crying out for repairs.
Jodex, with care, drops Vince to the floor. Vince felt the prick as the cold floor stabbed his frozen body. The tiling was a dusty as could be.
The kidnapper began to unwrap the tarp, and the rage in Vince started to speak. It gave him all sorts of strange ideas of what he could do if the spell came off once he became free.
