RIDLEY

“Holy fuck,” I breathe as I stare at the tiny kitten that had once been Leon. He looks like he could fit in the palm of my hand, but he has a huge, glorious mane of gold around his tiny face. His whiskers twitch as he whimpers, dropping his head so it’s pressed against his yellow paws.

“Good going, Ridley,” Keller remarks dryly, his apathetic eyes landing on my face. “You scared the cowardly kitten.”

“You’re a lying piece of shit, you know that?” I snap. My anger threatens to burn me from the inside out. It sears my flesh in a way that has me biting back a sound of raw, unfettered pain.

“Ridley, what do you want us to do?” Aaron asks urgently. He gives Keller a look full of unveiled disdain, but Keller doesn’t even blink at the animosity tainting the air. The man looks positively . . . smug, as if he has another card up his sleeve, another ace, another trick.

But what could he possibly have?

“Grab Ren, Julian, and Grant,” I instruct, knowing that, out of everyone, the three of them will be able to help me the most. And then, as an afterthought, I add, “Kyler as well.”

Something indecipherable flits over Aaron’s face, but he nods once, a single jerk of his chin. He makes a move towards the door but pauses at the last second. His eyes spark with indecision a moment before he drags me towards him and presses his lips to my forehead.

It’s a chaste kiss—sweet, some would say—but fire still races through my veins, and goose bumps erupt on my skin. When he pulls away, we’re both panting as though we’ve just spent the last few hours making out.

“Are you going to be okay?” he whispers, reverently pushing one of my curls behind my ear.

“I will be.” I cast Keller a look out of the corner of my eye. God, how could I have been so stupid? I trusted that sick motherfucker.

Am I stupid to trust the other contestants as well?

Is Keller the only one who’s a part of this, or are there more?

Suddenly, I can’t be in Aaron’s arms a moment longer. I can’t be in any of their arms. It’s too much, too soon.

My heart batters my rib cage like a shattering ram, and I feel lightheaded. Dark spots freckle my vision as my consciousness becomes fragmented.

Maybe that’s my downfall. Maybe my ability to always see the good in people is what will inevitably lead to my death. Just how many of these men have lied to me?

And how can I ever forgive them?

Aaron must see something on my face, because his red brows pull low over shadowed eyes. But he doesn’t comment. He only kisses the tip of my nose and hurries out of the room.

Only when he’s gone—when his heat isn’t so sweltering I’m afraid my skin is going to melt off my bones—do I collapse against the dresser and work to get my breathing under control.

In and out.
