CHAPTER 19

The crowd at Mooney’s has thinned when I return. The night is chillier. Donnie Davis has joined Mack and Eddie, standing alongside the Mercury, as I pull up and keep The Bomb’s engine running. Mack gets into the front, Eddie and Donnie into the rear.

“Are you guys out of your minds?” I ask.

Eddie’s teeth are chattering. “It’s not bad once you get used to it.” He lacks any sense of conviction.

“Donnie, you must be hard up for companionship tonight,” I continue. “Where’s Marnie?”

“She has a family thing. Her aunt’s birthday. I got a free pass… was with some of the guys on the team. The heater in this thing is something! It’s like the tropics in here.”

“It’s not the heater. It’s the heat,” Eddie says. “Jimmy just took Margie Rey home. That’s the secret!”

Right.

Mack starts. “Here’s the deal. Eddie and I have this little disagreement going on. He seems to be under the mistaken impression that his Ford piece of crap can run with my car. Ever heard of such nonsense?”

“I have no position here,” I say, still thinking about the little peck that ended my evening. “Eddie, you secretly drop in a new engine, or are you simply a lunatic?”

“You gotta pay to play,” Eddie says. “How will Mack know if we don’t go?”

Mack continues. “Cute. Just too cool. How about a little run out on the road to Glenwood Park, out past our friend’s sweetie-pie’s house. I got ten bucks that says you can’t stay with the horses over there under my hood. In fact, we can impress Margie Rey by laying on our horns while we drive by.”

“Cut the horns,” I say flatly. That’s all I need.

Eddie and Mack get out and put up Mack’s top. There’s a smattering of sarcastic applause from the remaining cars. One little beep-beep as well. Donnie moves up to The Bomb’s passenger seat. He and I will witness the start of the race.

With little traffic at that late hour, our mini-caravan passes Courthouse Square and makes the left turn. Mack leads the way. His parents’ home is just prior to the curve, so he’ll be a model driver at that point. As we pass the cemetery and near the Howland’s, he accelerates and blows his horn just as we pass the house. Eddie lays on his horn as well. Last in line, I try to make The Bomb invisible.

New Hope Road is a well-paved, two-lane highway. It has only one good straight stretch, nearly a half mile long, a veritable forever bookmarked by long sweeping curves at both ends. Midnight drag racers gather late at night and run side by side over a quarter-mile course, indicated by wide painted white stripes marking start and finish lines. As you might expect, the local residents take a dim view of these proceedings and have pressured the State Police to patrol that stretch frequently to nab the offenders.

Someone just turns on the front door light! By the time the light fades into a dot in the rearview mirror, Eddie and I are closing in on Mack, who has slowed down.
