Chapter Nineteen

I helped lug the bits and pieces we’d need from the space craft, paying particular attention to the items I could use for cooking. Though it galled me to be relegated to the kitchen, it was at least something I knew I could do. And it was necessary.

Once we’d made the living space habitable, Briad offered to take me down to the lower levels of the tree to see if we could find some of the berries mentioned in the files confiscated from the poachers. Kliad immediately offered to join us, and I knew his interest was in my safety more than berries.

Together, the three of us set out on our hunting and gathering trip. The first thing I had to learn was how to rappel down the tree, using special equipment they had aboard ship. It made climbing up again a breeze, as well, because all you had to do was click the mechanism on the belt, and a small winch type device began lifting you upwards.

Once I knew what to do, I watched as Kliad went first. The clouds were about a quarter of a mile or so below us, so we needed very long ropes. It amazed me how thin they were. More like string. If it had been anything man-made, I would have been sure it would never hold us up. But the rope was amazing, and probably could have carried someone twice as heavy as one of the Danans.

For the first time since leaving home, I was excited and happy. This was a real adventure, and for a short while I could forget all about my other concerns and just enjoy the experience with my guys.

When had I started thinking of them as my guys? Maybe when I first found out what lengths they’d gone to for me. Or maybe it was when I’d heard the sex-mad Kliad and Yaidin hadn’t wanted anyone but me from the moment they met me. Even though I knew it was only the bond at work, it was kind of reassuring. The last thing I’d ever want was some guy who cheated on me.

I laughed at that thought. I wouldn’t stand for them cheating on me, but it was okay for me to have sex with each of the other four guys in the pod. How did that even work? Did they get jealous of each other? Would their natural alpha tendencies kick in to make them want to fight for my attention? I hoped not. If that happened, I was on the first spaceship home.

Yeah, right. Even as I thought such a thing, I knew it wouldn’t be happening. My home with Lettie and Leon was a thing of the past. I had to let it go, as I’d let go of many homes I’d lived in when I was growing up. I got three good years with them, and I had to be happy with that.

Once Kliad was well on his way, it was my turn. Briad checked and rechecked my ropes and climbing mechanism before he said I was good to go.
