Chapter 10
Nothing like a hot shower to wash the shame off when youâve just fucked a pixie from hell and gave her some kind of new power.
Later that day, carrying on with some chores, I was trimming the edge of the wheatfield, trying to clear my head. The whole thing with June had left me more conflicted than ever. Sheâd said I needed to do the same with Shelly, but what kind of pain were we talking? And what about my Future selfâs warning?
Too bad the girls were at the lake swimming. They would be helpful to talk to.
The tall stalks of wheat swayed in the breeze, their golden heads bobbing like a crowd of sleepy spectators. I liked coming out here; it was one of the few places that felt truly peaceful. As a kid, I used to imagine the field was an ocean and I was a pirate cutting through the waves. Now, I just liked the solitude.
I was so deep in my thoughts that I almost didnât notice her. Tiffany. She stood at the edge of the field, and for a split second, I thought she was a scarecrow with green hair. Her skin had a sickly yellow tint, and her eyes were sunken, like two dark pits of coal. But the most alarming thing was her bellyâround and full, like she was nine months pregnant.
âTiffany?â I called out, my voice cracking with uncertainty.
She turned slowly, and a chill ran down my spine. Her movements were jerky, unnatural, like a marionette being yanked on its strings. When she faced me, her lips curled into a grotesque parody of a smile.
âBenny,â she said, her voice hollow and echoing. âWe need to talk.â
Every instinct in my body screamed at me to run, but my feet were rooted to the ground. This wasnât the Tiffany I knew. This was something else, something darker.
âIâuhâhave to go,â I stammered, taking a hesitant step backward.
âDonât you care about your child?â she said, one hand caressing her swollen belly. âYou canât just leave us, Ben.â
That broke the spell. I turned and bolted, the wheat slashing at my legs as I tore through the field. My heart pounded in my ears, drowning out the sound of my own panicked breathing.
âBen! You canât run from this!â Her voice carried over the rustling wheat, and I risked a glance back. She was floating above the stalks, her body stretched and distorted like a wraith. A green, unholy light flickered in her eyes.
I cursed under my breath and pushed harder, my legs burning with each stride. I was almost to the dirt path that led back to the academy when an invisible force yanked me off my feet. I flew through the air and landed hard on my back, the wind knocked out of me.
Tiffany descended slowly, her feet touching the ground with a delicate, bird-like grace. She walked toward me, and I struggled to get up, but my body was paralyzed.
âYouâre just like your deadbeat dad,â she said, her face contorting with anger.
