Chapter Twelve

MASON FIDGETED AS HE got himself prepared to see his daughter. She was just a baby when he left. How was she going to react to him? How would he react when he sees her? She would have no memory, only the pictures and the words that Rebecca had told her.

“You are worrying too much my husband. This will all be just fine.”

“No it won’t, and you know that Saree. How do I explain why I left her and her mother all those years ago? How do I explain that I came here and why? How do I tell her that she has younger half-brothers and a baby half-sister that I stayed with while I abandoned her? How do you explain things like that? She will hate me and I cannot blame her. What about Rebecca? What is this going to do to our family? I am angry that Braxton has brought them here.”

“Stop right now. You are a good father and she will see this. We will deal with our adult issues later; right now you must go and meet your child. Let her know that she has been special in your heart all these years.”

“That is so easily said and so impossible to do.”

Saree laughed. “Men you are so ...” as she picked up the baby and headed out of the tepee.

Mason walked out behind her.

He stood in front of Takoda’s tepee and for the first time he could ever remember he wanted to turn and run.

Takoda opened the flap and welcomed Mason and Saree in.

Mason took a look at Rebecca and everything he ever felt for her rushed to his head. She was beautiful and glowing. She was also pregnant, something he was not prepared for. He maintained his dignity and moved to hug her.

“You look wonderful Bec.”

She smiled and hugged him back. “You look good too Mason.” It felt good to have his arms around her. This was the first man she had ever loved. She also knew that he had made a sacrifice that no man should ever have to do. When they were younger they had a gift of being able to know each other's thoughts. It was similar to the visions that she would have. Suddenly being this close to him she found that this gift had not disappeared. It may have been blocked but the rush of his thoughts going through her head was like a waterfall rushing over the rocks. She could hear every thought he was thinking as he also knew hers. They were both facing a great fear that neither of them could hide from the other. Not a word was spoken out loud. It was just a silent thunder of emotions going off inside their heads.

“Alexis, this is your father. I am not sure if you have any memories of him.”

Mason stood tall as he looked at his grown daughter. She was as beautiful as Rebecca. He had to say that Braxton had taken good care of his family.
