CHAPTER
Morning dawned with a gradual increase of light that turned the edges of the curtains into black frames.
A thin shaft of sunlight crept across the floor and landed in Bob’s eyes.
He blinked them open and rubbed the back of his hand across his face.
Not too long ago, waking up in a strange place would skyrocket his anxiety and make him neurotic.
Now it was par for the course.
He was just glad to wake up and not be an appetizer for some Z. Or a main course, he patted his stomach.
He sat up and bit back a groan.
His shoulder and right side of his body was sore from carrying Steve.
He stretched and tried to work out the kinks.
Emma lay on the floor in front of the couch, curled up with her back to the fabric of the sofa. Her body was under the edge of the blanket that covered Steve.
Bob studied the still form of the boy on the couch, watching for movement, the rise and fall of his chest.
When he saw it, he let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding and sighed.
He pushed up off the floor and peeked through the covering on the French doors. The back yard was empty, morning creeping across deck.
He nodded.
It was tough to explore by the flickering firelight of a tiny torch last night, so he planned to see what he could find in better light.
Hopefully, it was something that could help Steve.
A packet of antibiotics would be great, but he didn’t hold out hope.
He knew a couple of names, but with Google and the internet gone, there was no way he could look up what any medicine they found would do.
He checked the bathroom again, but Emma did a good job cleaning out the cabinet. There was a linen closet in the hallway and he found hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol on the shelf, which he could use, along with sunscreen and nail polish remover, which he couldn’t.
He walked a couple of clean towels and the new treasures back to set them beside the couch.
Emma wasn’t awake yet, so he let her sleep awhile longer while he explored the other bathroom.
There was cold medicine, which might help the fever, but no antibiotics. Shaving cream, aftershave, razors and mouthwash.
He swished some of the blue liquid across his gums and spat it into the sink.
“Bob!” Emma called.
He hurried back to the living room.
She had the bandage unwrapped and stared up at Bob with huge eyes.
Steve’s arm was swollen and red, harsh lines of purple radiated from the wound.
Bob gaped at the damage.
“Yeah,” Steve said. “It could be worse.”
“How?”
“Remember the pole?”
“The one that shoved through your arm?” Bob exclaimed. “Yeah, I kinda don’t think I’ll ever forget it.”
Steve adjusted on the couch, trying to find a comfortable spot.
“Right, that one,” said Steve. “I used the end to kill a Z.”
“I remember that too,” Bob said. “Right through the mouth.”
Steve looked at Emma as she began to cry.
“I don’t know which end went through me,” he rasped.
