Chapter 10

Liz

It’s all too familiar as I put on a paper gown, bladder filled with water, and lay on the table, while the ultrasound technician squirts freezing cold jelly onto my stomach. Only this time, I’m with Bryn, not alone, since Nate’s dad was too squeamish to do anything with me medically when I was pregnant. He wasn’t even there for the goddamn delivery. Asshole. But Bryn’s smile is as wide as the day is long, and his hand doesn’t leave mine.

“This your first?” Suzie, the technician, asks.

“Mine, yes.” Bryn answers honestly, as she starts sliding the instrument around my belly. When she turns on the sound, the tears start to pour down my cheeks. That makes it real. I’m having a baby. I’m having Bryn’s baby. The monitor is bright with the amoeba-like image of the fetus, and the baby’s heartbeat is so fast, I can’t keep count. Bryn’s tilting his head, trying to keep count, as is the technician, and then it happens.

“Do you have twins in the family?” Suzie asks.

“My brother has twins, yes.” Bryn answers, and then his eyes widen as he looks at me. “Are you…are you saying that there’s two babies in there?”

Suzie listens with one ear as she smooths the gel over my stomach more. When she sees what she’s looking for, as the tears continue to pour down my cheeks, and my hand is almost breaking Bryn’s, she nods. “Yes. Yes, there is. I can see two heartbeats in there. They’re tiny, but they’re there. You’re only about seven weeks along, but I can see them.”

My hand goes to my mouth. “Oh, God, Bryn, you hit the jackpot!”

“You can say that again, darlin’.” He chuckles, his smile wide. “I met the most beautiful woman in the world, and now she’s having my babies. I get two for the price of one.”

I’m having a baby. I’m having two babies.

“Do you want to take a recording of the heartbeats?” Suzie suggests.

Bryn takes his phone out of his pocket and opens the recorded notes app. After a moment of recording, he speaks again. “Gosh, I can’t believe this. This just makes…well, it makes my life, if we’re being honest here.”

“Congratulations.” Suzie says. “I’ll get you the stills. The results should be with your doctor by the end of the day.”

“Thank you.” I gush. “Thank you so much.” I’m so giddy my voice sounds like I’m thanking her for getting me pregnant or something.

“I’ll be just a moment.” Suzie says, as she walks out the door.

We look at each other and Bryn kisses me on the lips. “Marry me.” he says against my mouth. “Marry me and make me the goddamn happiest man alive.”

“I’ll marry you. Hell, any man who can knock me up twice in the same try gets to marry me.” I chuckle.

He laughs. I laugh. We’re both laughing as we hear the knock and Suzie re-enters the room. “What’s so funny?” she asks with a soft laugh.

“Oh, nothing. We’re just getting married now is all.
