Case Study: Dynamo Removing The Fan

It’s always the simple jobs. Only one big nut holds the fan and pulley in place, but try as you might you can’t stop the pulley spinning. A lever wedged amongst the fan blades soon makes a bad job worse. So here’s a tip for you.

Wrap sisal around the pulley and then tie it off before undoing that nut (1). The sisal fibres grip the pulley wheel; the more you apply pressure to the nut, the greater the grip becomes.

Note carefully the collar and woodruff key which are visible once the pulley and fan blades have been removed (2). The key levers out using a screwdriver blade. The collar simply slides out.
