Chapter 7. Day Six
I WOKE UP in a terrible state. Neither the armor nor the several potions I downed helped immediately against the tremor as my limbs were thawing out. But the worst was my eyes. I couldnât see anything, My eyes were burning as if they had been pierced or burnt; only after a while did I start seeing the world again, in black and red. It was quite a while before I not only felt the cold of the steel bars of my small prison, but also appreciated the panorama beyond them.
A large number of bird cages were hanging high up in the air, swinging from careless movements; inside them were all the lucky guys like myself. The cages were small; it was impossible to stand in them at full height. Neither could the inhabitants of this âbird marketâ stretch themselves out on the floor. The group was varied: there were both players and NPCs of all sorts of appearances, sizes and levels. Some were still unconscious, some, in futile fury, were trying to chew through the bars of their cages with their huge fangs. Altogether Steve counted fifty-two cages in which fifty of my opponents were confined. I was in one cage, and my teacher in another. Steve quickly found Archibald among the participants. My teacher was unconscious, and I was worried because he still had not come to. I was counting on his help..
About a dozen cages away I saw a familiar face. Devir was fully ready to do battle, actively instructing his fighters, who were in their cages nearby; they nodded and made suggestions to develop their tactical plan for the battle. One could but envy their excellent teamwork.
Some more time passed; I spent it looking around to check out where we were. A sand arena was shining below like white gold. Apparently the contest was to be held right here. Its entire perimeter was surrounded by an impenetrable dome that concealed the spectators from us. I took out my comm and tried to get through first to Archibald, then to Alard. No luck. The scrolls didnât work either. My initial idea had been correct: the dome completely blocked us out from the outside world.
Finally, all the participants except Archibald had regained consciousness. Feeling trapped and without a plan, I called the Temple of Knowledge:
âI need information about the rules of Nardine Games!â Damned Archibald had signed up to this weird enterprise both for himself and for me, without giving any indication at all as to what would be the right thing to do.
âThe inquiry is considered insignificant, but due to elevated reputation the visit to the Temple has been permitted. You have two informal visits remaining. Additional questions are not available during informal visits.â
Once in the Temple, I breathed. Prior to this no one had told me that I could visit the Temple without a âproperâ reason. But this surprise was pleasant and came at a good time. The scroll I needed was set on the table as usual.
