THE RESCUE

A ilsa could not eat, pray, sit still, walk around or do anything. Bruce sent a note instructing her to be in the stables after the bells rang at midnight.

When she got there, she was amazed. Everything was black. The men were draped in black cloth and had their faces blackened with soot.

"We must be as quiet as mice, Ailsa," Bruce whispered. "No one must see us leave."

Ailsa, who was wearing one of Bruce's boyhood mail shirts and breeches, blackened her own face and they set off in file, five big men, and one small woman. She had to run to keep up with them, but she did it.

It was about a mile to the river. No one said a word; the only sound was their feet whispering in the frosty grass.

When they got there, three big rowing boats were waiting. It was not unusual to see boats tethered by the river, so nothing looked suspicious. They rowed in silence for what seemed like an eternity then they stopped and let the boat drift into the bank. It was so dark that even with their night adjusted eyes they could barely see.

The camp was visible a hundred yards or so away, and they saw the campfire's red glow between the rushes. The two guards were talking to each other, laughing and chewing meat and bread. There was not a sound from the cage, and Ailsa's heart went cold.

One of the guards got up and began to walk towards them, and they froze, but he was only relieving himself.

Robert walked up behind him and clubbed him with the hilt of his sword. He fell without a sound.

"Ailsa," Wallace said in a soft whisper, "you're small. Crawl over to the cage on your stomach and touch Duncan's elbow. He'll know what to do next."

Ailsa could see Douglas by the light of the fire now. He looked frozen and miserable, and her heart went out to him. His brows were drawn down, and he looked as if he would rather be anywhere else in the world.

Not long now, sweetheart, she thought, smiling inwardly. She began to crawl.

Douglas was freezing. He had been sitting in the same cramped position for hours and had lost the feeling in his feet. It was completely impossible to sleep, so he filled his mind with thoughts of Ailsa. She was saying:

"I submit," but not in the resigned, compliant way of their first few days, but in fun, then in joy, then in passion. When – if – he got back he would show her the joy he took in every curve of her body and every small sound she made when they were making love. He had already initiated her into the mysteries, but she had yet to discover more. He had so much to teach her, and he would enjoy every moment. Even when she was with child, there were gentle ways of coming together. He did not want her to miss a moment.

Suddenly Duncan dug him in the ribs.
