Eskara awakened on the hard, dark wooden floor of the tower. She coughed a few times, as the sensation of water inside her lungs clung, choking her, until eventually she was simply wheezing. She was alive, and had been left in the corner of the kitchen where she slept under an empty potato sack, when she was ever allowed to rest. Unfortunately, though, she was still naked. She wanted to remain where she was forever, in the hope that she would be left alone, but she knew that the old man would look for her eventually. It would be much better to face her upcoming demise with a full stomach, she decided, so she mentally ran through all the things in the pantry that might be quick or easy to make. Porridge was a strong contender. Gradually getting to her feet, she stretched and rolled her neck, then she jumped and clapped a hand over her mouth to avoid screaming.

The woodcutter had just walked into the kitchen. He was inside the tower. It wasn’t possible. Garamond’s spells were powerful, and yet, an ordinary woodsman had gotten past them and was here, and he was staring at her naked and startled form, while she was still trying not to scream. He wasn’t moving, and his eyes roved her body. She ran through every explanation for his presence, then gave up. The least she could do was put her tits away, she decided. When she was trying to subtly reach for her dress to cover herself, he shook his head.

“No time. Come on.”

“We can’t! Wherever I go, Garamond will find me.” She seized the potato sack and wrapped it around her body, fastening it with magic.

“Don’t worry about that. I can stop him, but you need to trust me.”

She looked up into his clear blue eyes, which radiated honesty, and she nodded. This whole situation was completely impossible, but still she dared to hope.

“All right.” She didn’t know what he might do against a powerful magic-user like Garamond, but she would rather spend more time with Emmett than remain here, alone, pondering her miserable fate. Anyway, if he consummated his claim over her, it would break Garamond’s hold, ensuring he couldn’t manipulate her life thread from afar any longer. She liked the idea of being away from her cruel master, even though she feared the consequences if Emmett’s rescue attempt went wrong.

Together, they sneaked down the stairs to the portal. From high above, Eskara heard movement. She stiffened.

“Faster,” Emmett told her. Eskara willed her feet to move more swiftly without making lots of noise. Inside herself, she felt Garamond tugging on her life thread, making her heart palpitate. They were so close to escaping. Emmett flung the portal door open as Eskara’s vision wavered between being stood beside Emmett and being on the highest floor, in a magic circle drawn by Garamond. Determined to get away, she threw up every resistance in her repertoire to stop Garamond from summoning her. In her heart, however, she knew she couldn’t fight him off for more than a few seconds.
