Pamela

Self-hatred is stabbing me in the chest and it’s the worst! This feeling has followed me ever since I first opened my mouth and couldn’t speak clearly. I never thought anything could top how bad that felt, but watching June tell Ford how awful I’ve been to others hurt so bad I would have traded that experience for physical pain if I could.

He looked at me like I was still Daddy’s angel when I got into my friend Spencer’s car, but I have no idea if he really wants to get past this or if he just wants to let me down gently.

He might have screwed up enough with his family to make their relationship seriously strained, but I know they’ll forgive him because he’s a great person. After everything he’s been through, he’s bitter and dealing with self-loathing, but none of that stopped him from being a kind person who was willing to help a stranger in her time of need, without a second thought.

He would never hurt others to build himself up, like I did.

I don’t deserve him, and I’m terrified he’ll realize that after he and June talk. He’s seen me vulnerable, seen me being seductive, playful, determined—and even aggressive—but he’s never seen me in bitch mode and I have no idea how he’ll react to the stories his niece will tell him.

“I know that guy,” Spencer says, as we drive past the same shaded houses, the same dog-walkers and joggers, and mailboxes with little flags on them I’ve seen every day of my life, growing up in this town. Everything is the same as it was when Hollis and I drove off to the woods, but after my time at Ford’s cabin, I feel so different. I want to be different, and put my mean-girl days behind me. “I’ve seen him in the family pictures on my boss’s walls, in his office. What happened to his face?”

“An accident.”

“It kind of suits him. Makes him look like a kickass villain from a spy film.”

“Try telling him that,” I say, sighing.

“So, are you dating him?” she presses.

“I’m not sure. I want to.”

“Good luck, if he’s related to Kourt Breyer. The Breyer men are hard to figure out.”

Spencer is Kourt’s assistant at the fire department. He just got promoted to fire chief, and besides his occupation, I don’t know anything about the handsome man. He’s definitely the strong and silent type.

He and Spencer have flirted for months now, but getting him to take the next step and ask her out has been like pulling teeth. He even admitted once he isn’t quite over another woman from his past. When she told me about it, she put on a brave face, swept a hand over her thick curves and said, “I think he might be lying. He might not be able to handle all of this anyway.” But I know she’s hurt by his rejection, and there’s no way I’ll hold it together like her if Ford rejects me after I gave him my virginity.
